Last friday you have seen this screen appears on pearltrees and some of you just tell me : what the hell is that???!!!???
Well, “that” is a vicinity map. It shows you the pearltrees that are close to the pearltrees in the middle of screen. On the screenshot “Barbey d’Aurevilly”. Of course the closest are on the first circle and so on…
How is that caculated? With a special algorythm made just for you we have called the tree rank. The idea of proximity is the more pearls you have in common the closest you are. So it calculates the “distance” from one pearltree to another for each pearltree.
Now you can explore your interest network, it mixes topics and editors acount because you can be close from topics as to persons.
PS : As we are not so many in the community for now sometimes it migh be strange for you to discover what or who you are close to, but imagine what it will when millions of people will edit their web…

Besides the nice rime, I think this is an interesting hypothesis to test : In fact, the 6 degrees of separation original concept refers to the idea that, if you are one step away from each person you know and two steps away from each person related to the person you know, then there is an average of six “steps” that separates you from each person on Earth.

If we replace ‘person’ by ‘Information’ or ‘Website’ and if we replace ‘Earth’ by ‘Peartlrees’, we obtain an interesting statement:
“if you are one step away from each website you know (ie. In your tree) and two steps away from each website related to the Website you know, then there is an average of six “steps” that separates you from any website on Pearltrees.”
If this statement is true, the old search engines should be worried 😉
